Cervical Screening: (Now covered
under HSE scheme)
Cervical screening involves taking cells
from the neck of the womb (smear test). The
sample is sent to a laboratory to detect early
pre cancerous changes. In the surgery this
procedure is carried out by a doctor, who will
usually assess the pelvis as well and discuss
eventual problems in this area.
We now also offer the Cervical
Cancer Vaccine - Gardasil. This
new vaccine has been approved by the FDA to
prevent cervical cancer and is suitable for
teenage girls and young adults.
Breast Check:
Breast disease is a worry to
women and breast cancer is
unfortunately the most common form of cancer in
women. As the incidence of breast cancer
increases with age, the government has
sponsored a mammography
service for over 50 year olds. All
women over 50 years ar strongly encouraged by
family practitioners to avail of this
service. IT SAVES LIVES.
Those under 50 are however by no means at low
risk and regular self examination is really
important to ensure early diagnosis and high
cure rates. Luckily the long term cure rate for
early disease is excellent - up to 90% - the
key is early diagnosis.
So every woman should get into the habit of
regular breast examination at least once a
month. Your doctor will teach you how to make a
reliable examination yourself.
Contraception:
We advise on the full range of contraceptive
options and also supply emergency contraception
if needed.
Ante and Postnatal
care:
We take part in the combined antenatal care
program, which is a free service to the patient
and reduces their visits to the hospital. We
enjoy looking after pregnant women and feel we
are in a good position to do this as we already
know other aspects of their health and
personality. Postnatal care is also provided
and includes an examination and discussion of
future contraception.
Unplanned Pregnancy:
We give full support to patients who present
with a "crisis pregnancy". We will arrange
counselling and support women in this difficult
situation.
Fertility Problems:
Up to 10% of couples have fertility
problems. We will talk to both partners,
organise blood tests, sperm counts and refer to
specialised clinics if necessary.
Menopause:
This phase in a woman's life can be
distressing and cause various emotional and
physical problems. All these issues can be
brought to the consultation and will be dealt
with in a sympathetic way. Tests can be
arranged and treatment
options discussed.
Osteoporosis:
Risk factors for osteoporosis will be
assessed in the consultation and local referral
for Dexa scans can be arranged.
